Why ISSB(Interlocking Soil Stabilized Brick)

Why ISSB(Interlocking Soil Stabilized Brick)

ISSB has numerous benefits for construction industry.
One of the advantages of ISSB is that they can be dry-stacked with minimal mortar, which increases the speed of construction.
This building system has been extensively tested for structural strength and durability, as well as for fire, rain and sound resistance.
The ISSB manual press machines only use three inputs namely soil that can be sourced at the site, a small amount of cement that provides stability for the blocks and water. Sometimes sand is used where clay content is too high. As a result, the machines are ideal for sites where transport cost for cement and sand is high.
They are eco-friendly, cost-saving alternative to conventional vibration machine. ISSB machines are available in different mould sizes. Depending on the size the machine has the capacity to produce between 500- 11520 blocks per eight-hour shift.
The machines are relatively labor intensive, requiring about two-six operators depending on the machine model. This creates employment opportunities and allows skill transfer.
With the depletion of our natural resources worldwide there was greater concern for the sustainability of whatever action we carry out. Rural areas have traditionally built homes, schools and other building using either compressed-mud bricks leavened with cement, mortared together and dried in wood-fired kilns or using wood and twigs from young trees woven together and smeared with mud or cow dung.

The bricks and the twigs have contributed to massive deforestation in the world. The bricks themselves are often irregular and poorly made or even poorly burned. Cement and mortar can make good housing in the villages very expensive and many tend to opt for traditional methods of construction. ISSB allow for quick and efficient construction of housing units and other buildings and water tanks.

We believe ISSB is an environmentally sound practice that has minimal impact on our natural resources. So the ‘footprint’ of what we will strive to do will unquestionably be very minimal. Interlocking Stabilized Soil Block machines we at CGK MACHINE manufacture come in automatic and manual options and are excellent machines with good service back up and compete favorably with the South African Hydra form machine which is very expensive to import and has little service back up.

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS MAKING IN RAINY DAYS

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS MAKING IN RAINY DAYS
To produce good quality interlocking blocks the necessary quantity of water must not be added all at once or to one part of the dry mix only. It is much better to add a little water at a time, sprinkled over the top of the mix, from a watering can with a rose spray on the nozzle.
The rains are here with us and all the farmers and everyone who eats from the soil is excited at the possibilities of a good harvest. But in interlocking blocks technology the rains come at a cost if you are not prepared.
Preparation means that you have to build a mixing shed before the rains start. This is important because of mixing of dry ratios such as soil and cement. When soil is wet and too damp it compromises the mix because there will be too many lumps in the mix.
When the rains hit your soil it negates all of the above. One way to work around this is to prepare your soil in advance and cover the soil completely using the juala we normally buy in rolls or in kilograms. You can also make further savings if you get a way of buying the used jualas.

You should also build a stacking and curing shed on the site where you are making blocks. Most clients see this as an unnecessary expenditure especially if you build the roof of the shed using roofing sheets. The trick is to get a good fundi so that you can later use these roofing sheets later when doing the roofing of the main house.

Thank God for the rains but be prepared because the rainy season is a trying time for block making.

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS BETTER THAN NDARUGO STONES?

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS BETTER THAN NDARUGO STONES?
The only way to understand the affordability of interlocking blocks is to look at housing holistically. You have to understand the basics of traditional and universally accepted construction which is stone and mortar or brick and mortar.
To understand interlocking blocks is to appreciate the minimal use of mortar and steel. Mortar in Issb(interlocking stabilised soil block) is used to join the first course to the floor slab and in all the courses above the lintol/lenta/lindoo/ridoo etc.
One of questions I get through the inbox and personal email is: "Does Issb works and is it cheaper than the machine cut stones commonly known as ndarugo?".
So today I will try to answer this question to the best of my understanding because I have been fortunate to work with both machine cut stones and interlocking blocks.
We need to agree what affordable housing or low cost housing is before we continue. My biased definition of low cost is a foundation that is 900mm deep, a floor slab at 100mm, floor to ceiling height of 2300mm, windows at 1200mm square, a roof pitch of below 18 degrees, no plaster, no ceiling and no fittings and a room with a floor area of 10 square meters.

Let us get back to the walls now that we have cleared that of our chests.
A 10 by10ft room will then (using the low cost description above) have a wall surface area of 24sm. Using the small blocks in the attached pictures means that we will theoretically require 792 blocks. If one block is valued at Kes 20.00 it means you will spend Kes 15,840.00 on the walls of the room excluding labour.
The advantages Interlocking blocks has over the ndarugo stones is you can avoid plastering and paint and your wall both inside and outside will resemble the first picture in this post.
However it is prudent to be clear that the cost of a block ranges from Kes 17.00 to Kes 30.00 depending of the availability of suitable affordable soils.
If you started life living in single rooms in Nairobi then you will agree with me when I say that interlocking block walls look better than Mabati, matofali and stone walls and your tenants wouldn't care. Guys pay rent of 2k to 3k in those rooms.
This post is targeted towards those with dreams of building rental houses of the single room variety.

In summary before I bore you with a long post I can honestly state that the affordability of interlocking block houses is directly related to the cost of suitable soils.
