The Interlocking stabilized Soil brick (ISSB) is made of a combination of cement and soil. The mix ration has to be determined on site depending on the quality of the local soils. In most cases a mix ratio of 1:4:10 is suitable. Therefore 1bag of cement (50kgs) can be able to produce 150 blocks. The finished product weighs approx.7kgs when fully cured and measures 270mm long 110mm high and 140mm wide or 11kgs for 300mm long by100 mm wide by 140 mm height block.

It incorporates an interlock along the length and height.  The block is durable and firm and can withstand many applications. Its durability is proven in that it is suitable for building water tanks.

ISSB blocks are rigid surface and medium size provides buildings with a level of control and flexibility unmatched by any other building block in the market. For example, without ruining the integrity of the out surface a builder can complete and do finishing of the house without the need to plaster the outer walls.

This flexibility is impossible with sand and concrete cement blocks. ISSB has numerous benefits for construction industry.

One of the advantages of ISSB is that they can be dry-stacked with minimal mortar, which increases the speed of construction.

This building system has been extensively tested for structural strength and durability, as well as for fire, rain and sound resistance.

The ISSB manual press machines only use three inputs namely soil that can be sourced at the site, a small amount of cement that provides stability for the blocks and water. Sometimes sand is used where clay content is too high. As a result, the machines are ideal for sites where transport cost for cement and sand is high.

They are eco-friendly, cost-saving alternative to conventional vibration machine. ISSB machines are available in different mould sizes. Depending on the size the machine has the capacity to produce between 500- 11520 blocks per eight-hour shift.

The machines are relatively labor intensive, requiring about two-six operators depending on the machine model. This creates employment opportunities and allows skill transfer.

With the depletion of our natural resources worldwide there was greater concern for the sustainability of whatever action we carry out. Rural areas have traditionally built homes, schools and other building using either compressed-mud bricks leavened with cement, mortared together and dried in wood-fired kilns or using wood and twigs from young trees woven together and smeared with mud or cow dung.

Cement and mortar can make good housing in the villages very expensive and many tend to opt for traditional methods of construction. ISSB allow for quick and efficient construction of housing units and other buildings and water tanks.
