WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR OURSELVES

When you get into the interlocking business you have to get in with your heart and you have to have the desire to succeed.
It may be hard during the start-up because you will be spending money on the soil, water, cement and the labor but once your clock starts ticking and you start getting the jobs you will wonder why you didn't invest in an interlock machine 5 years ago.

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS MAKING IN RAINY DAYS

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS MAKING IN RAINY DAYS
To produce good quality interlocking blocks the necessary quantity of water must not be added all at once or to one part of the dry mix only. It is much better to add a little water at a time, sprinkled over the top of the mix, from a watering can with a rose spray on the nozzle.
The rains are here with us and all the farmers and everyone who eats from the soil is excited at the possibilities of a good harvest. But in interlocking blocks technology the rains come at a cost if you are not prepared.
Preparation means that you have to build a mixing shed before the rains start. This is important because of mixing of dry ratios such as soil and cement. When soil is wet and too damp it compromises the mix because there will be too many lumps in the mix.
When the rains hit your soil it negates all of the above. One way to work around this is to prepare your soil in advance and cover the soil completely using the juala we normally buy in rolls or in kilograms. You can also make further savings if you get a way of buying the used jualas.

You should also build a stacking and curing shed on the site where you are making blocks. Most clients see this as an unnecessary expenditure especially if you build the roof of the shed using roofing sheets. The trick is to get a good fundi so that you can later use these roofing sheets later when doing the roofing of the main house.

Thank God for the rains but be prepared because the rainy season is a trying time for block making.

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS BETTER THAN NDARUGO STONES?

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS BETTER THAN NDARUGO STONES?
The only way to understand the affordability of interlocking blocks is to look at housing holistically. You have to understand the basics of traditional and universally accepted construction which is stone and mortar or brick and mortar.
To understand interlocking blocks is to appreciate the minimal use of mortar and steel. Mortar in Issb(interlocking stabilised soil block) is used to join the first course to the floor slab and in all the courses above the lintol/lenta/lindoo/ridoo etc.
One of questions I get through the inbox and personal email is: "Does Issb works and is it cheaper than the machine cut stones commonly known as ndarugo?".
So today I will try to answer this question to the best of my understanding because I have been fortunate to work with both machine cut stones and interlocking blocks.
We need to agree what affordable housing or low cost housing is before we continue. My biased definition of low cost is a foundation that is 900mm deep, a floor slab at 100mm, floor to ceiling height of 2300mm, windows at 1200mm square, a roof pitch of below 18 degrees, no plaster, no ceiling and no fittings and a room with a floor area of 10 square meters.

Let us get back to the walls now that we have cleared that of our chests.
A 10 by10ft room will then (using the low cost description above) have a wall surface area of 24sm. Using the small blocks in the attached pictures means that we will theoretically require 792 blocks. If one block is valued at Kes 20.00 it means you will spend Kes 15,840.00 on the walls of the room excluding labour.
The advantages Interlocking blocks has over the ndarugo stones is you can avoid plastering and paint and your wall both inside and outside will resemble the first picture in this post.
However it is prudent to be clear that the cost of a block ranges from Kes 17.00 to Kes 30.00 depending of the availability of suitable affordable soils.
If you started life living in single rooms in Nairobi then you will agree with me when I say that interlocking block walls look better than Mabati, matofali and stone walls and your tenants wouldn't care. Guys pay rent of 2k to 3k in those rooms.
This post is targeted towards those with dreams of building rental houses of the single room variety.

In summary before I bore you with a long post I can honestly state that the affordability of interlocking block houses is directly related to the cost of suitable soils.

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS AND INTERLOCKING PAVERS CURING PROCEDURES

Because of lack of training most people ignore or are unaware of the curing period and its importance and when the block fails the interlocking technology is blamed and subsequently gets bad press.
In interlocking blocks and interlocking pavers curing is the most important phase and poor curing practice is reason why the cement stabilized blocks fail.
Good curing practice is not followed for one of two reasons. Either the producer is not aware of the need for curing or it is felt that the cost of constructing a suitable curing area is not worth the potential increase in quality.
Experiments have shown that the strength lost due to poor curing can easily reduce the final block bulk strength by 20%. As the block surfaces lose water first, strength loss in these regions is still higher.
The loss of surface strength reduces both the handle-ability (edge and corner chipping during transport) and the durability of the blocks.
And when this happens clients interested in the technology get discouraged because of such cases. Some of the bad practices are blocks are frequently left uncovered and out in the sun to "dry”.
Cement relies on the presence of water to hydrate, forming an interlocking skeleton of calcium silicate hydrate which gives the material its strength.

If the interlocking blocks is allowed to prematurely dry then full hydration of the cement does not occur and consequently only part of the cement used contributes to the strength of the block.
If proper curing were implemented, maintaining the molding water content for at least 21 days, then both strength and durability improvements would be seen.
The curing area should be flat and a black polythene paper should be laid on the ground to receive fresh interlocking blocks and interlocking pavers from the press. If you want to reduce expenses you can always use the empty cement bags.
The curing shed doesn’t need to be unnecessarily expensive. It can be done using round timber poles and a shade net. The second hand shade nets are easily available in Naivasha at an affordable cost.

The best practice during the curing period is to water/irrigate the blocks twice a day, in the morning and evening for the 21 days. Always use a watering can when watering your blocks. During this time the blocks should be properly covered using the black polythene paper.

HIGH QUALITY INTERLOCKING BLOCKS MACHINE

Interlocking blocks has been more and more popular because of its environment protection, cheaper and many other strengths.

So the interlocking block machines slection is very important to produce Interlocking blocks.
CGK Block machine is an expert in Block machine line with 11 years Research and development experiences.
The CGK Hydraulic Interlocking clay brick making machines have diesel engine and electric motor. Diesel engine is suitable for Lack powder district. And Electric is suitable for power enough district. there are also manual interlock machine available.
and there is also electric interlocking clay brick machines following:

The above clay brick machine productivity about 1400-2800 bricks per eight hours.

CGK machine offer:
1 all kinds of brick making machines-Hollow brick machine, Interlocking clay brick machine, movable brick machine.
2 Brick machine auxiliary: Cement Silo, batching machines, conveyors, mixers, color feeding system , Stacking machine, moulds, pallets, Forklift etc the whole production line.
3 providing PLC Controller, hydraulic station, Electric control cabinet, Operation panel etc Core technology equipments of brick machines and other customer required.
4 Supplying customize block machines as per client requirements.
5 Offering customers with personalized service, to provide solutions for customer technical problems.

The benefits of the Interlocking blocks:                                                                              1.The making of 3000 Interlocking blocks will save 10 tonnes of trees.
2.Only one bag of cement is needed to make 150 blocks.                                                  3. Cost saving because of less time needed to make them.
4.The blocks do not need to be fired
5.They are double the size of a normal fired brick so you only need to use half the number of bricks.
6.There is no mortar needed between the bricks because of the interlocking system, so mortar is only needed on top and bottom of the brick.
7.Uniformed shape for every brick, which uses less mortar and render – saves up to 50% compared to using fired bricks.
8.Bricks are used 4 hours after making them, therefore construction can continue as the bricks are being made.
